Who qualifies for the Warmer Homes scheme

Either you own the home or you are a private tenant, and you have lived in it for at least six months. One of the following must be true as well:

  • A qualifying benefit, for example Pension Credit Guarantee Credit or Council Tax Reduction, goes to at least one person living there.
  • The home can qualify too when a resident is aged 75 or over and there's no working heating.

Your home needs to fall in council tax band A to G and be no bigger than 230m². Landlord's permission is required if you rent privately. The rules come from Home Energy Scotland.

What the scheme pays for

  • Insulation for walls and lofts
  • Blocking draughts
  • Central heating, for example gas boilers and air source heat pumps
  • Renewables, if they suit the home

How to apply

  1. Get in touch with Home Energy Scotland. It checks whether you qualify.
  2. Your home is then sent on to Warmworks, the scheme's operator, by Home Energy Scotland.
  3. Warmworks surveys your home and sets up the work.

If you don't qualify

Homeowners that don't meet the benefit rules can still claim the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan, which has no income test. Every scheme in Scotland appears on the insulation grants in Scotland list.

Common questions about the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme

Is Warmer Homes Scotland free?

In most cases, yes: the Scottish Government meets the full cost. Where a contribution is needed, an interest-free loan can cover it, after a credit check and an admin fee.

Does Pension Credit count for Warmer Homes Scotland?

Pension Credit Guarantee Credit does. Savings Credit on its own does not.

Does the single person council tax discount count?

No. Council Tax Reduction counts, but the 25% single person or student discount does not.

Can I apply again?

Not if the scheme helped your home in the last 12 months.
